Let’s face it (LOL!), when you are pregnant and breastfeeding there are not a lot of beauty products you can use on your face that are safe. If you have issue with hyperpigmentation, dullness and large pores, say “Bye Bye” to retinols, hydroquinone, etc. I came across The Ordinary products by Deciem on Youtube when I searched for great products for hyperpigmentation. After watching a few of these YouTube video reviews I liked what I was seeing and hearing then I learned how ridiculously affordable the products were and decided it was too good to be true. But I watched a few more video reviews and I realized that The Ordinary had a cult-like following — these products are legit. I love the fact that they have no fluff and that they are cruel free. So, I decided to give The Ordinary a try 1) because of the rave reviews and 2) because trying the products would not break the bank; and 3) they had lots of products I could use that are safe while pregnant and breastfeeding. Here are the products I have been using for hyperpigmentation for the last few weeks and a few other products for other regimens that are safe as well.
1. Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG
One of my biggest problems is my dark circles under my eyes. It’s hereditary and so there is no cure, but a consistent regimen and rest help significantly. This product is a water based solution and is pretty amazing. One thing about over the counter products, even the Ordinary is you have to use the product consistently and at least 4-6 weeks need to pass before you see a significant improvement. This product is no different in that sense. With that said once used for that period of time it delivered. I use it twice daily. It goes on smoothly and a little goes a long way. I would definitely recommend it.
2. Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%
This serum is also water based and helps to reduce the signs of congestion and visible sebum activity. This is great for my large pores. It makes my face feel so smooth. The Ordinary’s Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% is the exception to having to use it for weeks to see a result. I felt and saw a result within a few days. I used this twice daily as well.
3. Lactic Acid + HA
The Ordinary’s Lactic Acid 5% + HA is a mild lactic acid superficial peeling formulation. Lactic Acid is an alpha hydroxyl acid that exfoliates the skin. This 5% formulation offers very mild exfoliation and does to cause visible peeling — at least not for me. This product is what basically took the place of my Retin-A. I use it once daily at night and started to see a result within 2-3 weeks.
4. Salycylic Masque
I honestly haven’t used this product as much as the other products (I think because I do not used masks as much). The mask is charcoal and clay based which are renowned for their deep cleansing abilities — aiding the removal of facial impurities. There is a tingly feeling while wearing the mask and after using the mask, I must say, my face felt cool and refreshed.
5. 100% Plant-Derived Squalane
I love this squalene. How is there a product that locks the moisture in but does not make my face feel greasy or that’s not heavy? No idea, but Deciem figured it out with this product. I used it twice daily after my water based serums and before my moisturizers. I highly recommend it.
6. Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA
This is another highly recommended product. I used this right before my sunscreen during the day and before my Azelaic Acid at night. It amazing. Another highly moisturizing product without the greasy heavy feel.
7. Azelaic Acid 10%
This product is what I used mostly for brightening, although the niacinamide brightens as well. It also visibly improves uneven skin texture and reducing signs of congestion. I used this twice daily after my NMF. It comes in a 1 0z tube but a little goes along way with this cream as well.
Overall, I felt that The Ordinary products delivered on what they are intended for. I do miss my stronger products; however, as a breast-feeding mother I cannot risk using products on my skin that will be harm my child . Once I stop breast-feeding I intend continue to use these products in conjunction with the products I used before pregnancy. I hope this post gives you some insight into some of The Ordinary products safe to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
