Next, you’ll want to determine what size portable air conditioner will fit in your window. You can find this information on the packaging or online at the manufacturer’s website. You’ll also see it listed on an Energy Star sticker if you’re buying one that’s Energy Star certified (which means it uses less energy).

Now, it may seem counterintuitive that an air conditioner with a lower BTU rating can actually cool down a larger room—but it’s true! The thing is, higher BTUs don’t always equal better cooling power.
